Why Choose Braley Care Homes?

Braley Care Homes was created from a father and son’s passion for quality assisted living in a home-like environment, spawned from their experience in the mental health field.

Chris and Dean Braley opened Braley Care Homes on March 29, 2005. Braley Care Homes expanded into Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and, memory care services in 2008. Chris Braley is the owner and administrator of Braley Care Homes and it remains the only free-standing Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and memory care facility in West Virginia. Our facility was built with dementia care in mind and is the ideal environment for someone with this disease. It is locked 24 hours per day and has a beautiful outdoor courtyard with a pastoral view, which is secure at all times.

Our memory care activities and behavior programming is geared toward meeting each individual’s needs, which helps keep their anxiety level down and reduces the risk of behavior issues.

Chris Braley has a bachelor’s and Master’s degree in social work and is an LICSW (licensed independent clinical social worker). Chris shares, “dementia is not only in my professional life, but also in my personal life. My grandmother and father suffered from dementia, so I know the pain the families go through as they watch helplessly as their love one suffers. Our goal at Braley Care Homes is to tap into each resident’s unique qualities and help bring a calmness to both their life and their family’s life.

Innovative Strategies in Memory Care: Harnessing Technology for Alzheimer's Patients

In the realm of memory care for Alzheimer's patients, technology is increasingly playing a pivotal role, offering innovative solutions to address various challenges faced by individuals with cognitive impairments and their caregivers. From assisting with daily tasks to promoting cognitive stimulation and enhancing safety, technological advancements are reshaping the landscape of Alzheimer's care in profound ways.

Smart Home Devices

Smart home devices, equipped with voice recognition and automation capabilities, are transforming the living spaces of Alzheimer's patients into safer and more accessible environments. Voice-controlled assistants like Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant can assist individuals with setting reminders, managing schedules, and even initiating calls to loved ones or caregivers. These devices also offer the convenience of controlling lights, thermostats, and other appliances through simple voice commands, empowering patients to maintain a sense of independence while ensuring their safety and comfort.

Wearable Technology

Wearable devices such as smartwatches or GPS trackers provide invaluable assistance in monitoring the well-being and whereabouts of Alzheimer's patients, particularly those prone to wandering or getting lost. These devices can send real-time alerts to caregivers if the wearer strays from designated safe zones, enabling prompt intervention and ensuring their swift return home. Additionally, some wearable technologies are equipped with vital sign monitoring capabilities, allowing caregivers to track the health status of patients remotely and detect any potential medical emergencies.

Virtual Reality (VR) Therapy

Virtual reality technology holds promise in providing immersive experiences that can stimulate cognition and evoke positive emotions in Alzheimer's patients. VR therapy programs offer simulated environments tailored to the individual interests and preferences of patients, such as virtual tours of nostalgic places or interactive games designed to enhance memory and cognitive function. By engaging patients in these virtual experiences, caregivers can alleviate feelings of isolation, boredom, and agitation while promoting mental engagement and well-being.

Telemedicine and Remote Monitoring

Telemedicine platforms and remote monitoring systems enable healthcare professionals to deliver specialized care and support to Alzheimer's patients from a distance. Through virtual consultations and remote monitoring of vital signs and symptoms, physicians can assess patients' health status, adjust medications, and provide timely interventions without the need for in-person visits. This approach not only enhances access to care for patients residing in remote areas but also minimizes the logistical challenges associated with transportation and appointments for individuals with cognitive impairments.

Cognitive Assistive Technologies

Cognitive assistive technologies encompass a range of applications and devices designed to support memory, communication, and problem-solving skills in Alzheimer's patients. These include interactive tablets with simplified interfaces and memory aids, reminder apps for medication management and daily tasks, and personalized digital journals for documenting memories and life events. By integrating these technologies into daily routines, caregivers can empower patients to maintain a sense of autonomy and function more independently despite cognitive challenges.

The Importance of Social Engagement in Alzheimer's Memory Care

Social engagement plays a pivotal role in the well-being of individuals living with Alzheimer's disease. As cognitive abilities decline, maintaining meaningful connections becomes increasingly vital for their emotional, mental, and even physical health. In this blog post, we'll explore why social interaction is essential in Alzheimer's memory care and how caregivers can facilitate and encourage these connections.

  • Fostering Connections: Caregivers in memory care settings play a crucial role in fostering social connections among residents. By creating a supportive and inclusive environment, caregivers can encourage interaction and meaningful relationships. Structured activities such as art therapy, music therapy, and reminiscence groups offer opportunities for residents to connect with one another based on shared interests and experiences.

  • Incorporating Family and Community: In addition to interactions within the memory care facility, involving family members and the broader community can enrich the social experiences of individuals with Alzheimer's. Family visits, whether in person or virtual, provide emotional support and strengthen familial bonds. Community volunteers, such as therapy animals or local performers, can also contribute to residents' social engagement by offering companionship and entertainment.

  • Adapting to Individual Needs: It's essential to recognize that each person with Alzheimer's has unique preferences and abilities when it comes to social interaction. Some may thrive in large group settings, while others may prefer one-on-one conversations or quieter activities. Caregivers should adapt their approaches based on individual needs, respecting personal boundaries and comfort levels while encouraging participation.

  • Overcoming Barriers: While social engagement is beneficial, certain barriers may hinder individuals with Alzheimer's from fully participating in social activities. These barriers could include communication difficulties, sensory impairments, or behavioral challenges. Caregivers can address these obstacles by employing creative communication techniques, providing sensory stimulation, and implementing personalized strategies to promote engagement.

  • Promoting Dignity and Respect: Above all, it's essential to approach social interaction in Alzheimer's memory care with empathy, dignity, and respect. Even as cognitive abilities decline, individuals with Alzheimer's deserve to maintain their sense of identity and autonomy. By valuing their unique experiences and contributions, caregivers can create meaningful opportunities for social connection that enhance overall quality of life.
